This post is a bit of a follow on from our previous blog on 10 beginner wing foiling tips. So if you have just started wing foiling, then you’re not alone and like most new riders you’re probably making a few of the classic and common beginner mistakes. The good news is, that’s totally normal. Wing foiling has a learning curve, and wiping out is part of the journey. But with the right tips, you can avoid some of the frustrating errors and make some real progress, faster.
In this blog post, we’ll have a look at the most 7 common beginner mistakes in wing foiling that we see with new riders, and how to correct them so you can spend more time flying and less time flopping around in the shallows.
Mistake #1: Standing Up Too Soon
We get it… everybody wants to be riding straight away. But rushing to get up onto your feet before you’ve figured out your wing control and balance is a quick way to frustration.
The Fix: Stay down on your knees until you can hold the wing steady and feel the pull. Practice moving from kneeling to squatting before going fully upright. Take the time to build that balance and confidence first.
Mistake #2: Poor Wing Positioning
Wing surfing isn’t about brute force and how strong you are, it’s about finesse. A common beginner mistake is trying to hold the wing too low or too far in front, which kills lift and drags you down.
The Fix: Keep the wing high and slightly overhead. This helps the wind flow through the canopy and gives you stable drive without stalling.

Mistake #3: Not Using Enough Wind
Too little wind and you’ll struggle to get going, or worse, you’ll drift downwind without lift. Many beginners try to learn on days that are too calm, thinking it’ll be easier.
The Fix: Look for wind in the 12–18 knot range when learning. Anything under 10 knots makes things unnecessarily difficult. If in doubt, ask your local shop, school or check out he forecast on Windguru.

Mistake #4: Ignoring Wind Direction
Launching without understanding the wind is a sure way to end up far down from where you started or a good way to get stuck.
The Fix: Learn to read the wind direction using flags, changes in the water texture, or even by feeling it blowing on your face. Make sure to launch with enough space downwind and ride across the wind (not directly with it) to maintain control.
Mistake #5: Foiling Too Early
Trying to lift and get up on the foil before you’re ready usually ends in a crash. And after a few nose-dives, your confidence takes a bit of a hit.
The Fix: Focus on smooth speed and balance before even thinking about lift off. Let the foil rise naturally and control your height with gentle foot pressure, not force.
Mistake #6: Using the Wrong Gear
Beginner riders are often handed gear that’s too advanced, unstable, or tricky to manage. A tiny board or narrow high-aspect foil will make learning a nightmare.
The Fix: Choose a large, stable wing board and a forgiving, low-aspect foil. Your wing size should suit the wind — go bigger in light conditions. Not sure what’s right? Renting first is a smart move.

Mistake #7: Not Falling Safely
Falling is inevitable, but doing it the wrong way can hurt you or damage your gear.
The Fix: Fall away from your gear, never try to break your fall with your hands. If possible, fall flat and avoid landing on the foil. Helmets and impact vests are a smart idea while you’re still learning.
Making mistakes is all part of the learning process. But the key factor is to recognize them early, correct them fast, and keep a positive mindset. Wing foiling is one of the most fun and addictive wind related sports out there, it just takes a bit of patience and persistence.
